Important Tips for when you are away from your Business!

11/22/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of The Andover's top priority is always safety. We are always a phone call away when unexpected troubles arises in your home or business, but we wish everyone to use caution and adhere to these tips!
Top 10 safety tips
  • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stove top so you can keep an eye on the food.
  • Stay in the home when cooking your turkey, and check on it frequently.
  • Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay three feet away.
  • Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.
  • Keep knives out of the reach of children.
  • Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.
  • Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet.
  • Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.
  • Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags.
  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.
Thanksgiving fire facts
  • Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day, Christmas Eve, and the day before Thanksgiving.
  • In 2017, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 1,600 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving, the peak day for such fires.
  • Unattended cooking was by far the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths.
  • Cooking equipment was involved in almost half of all reported home fires and home fire injuries, and it is the second leading cause of home fire deaths.

Speed up Mother Nature

11/17/2021 (Permalink)

So often we hear “You can’t control Mother Nature.” But what if you could speed up the process of drying when your home or business in Andover or North Andover suffers an unfortunate event such as water damage from putting out a fire or burst water pipe? Did you know there is an actual science behind the process of drying? Before reaching for the towels, a mop, and a few fans, read on to learn more about this process.

Psychometrics or the "science of drying" is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to it preloss condition. The SERVPRO® of The Andovers professionals are trained in this science of drying and follow strict industry approved standards to help lower the chances of secondary damages. We will:

  • Inspect the building to detect every component that is wet to help prevent secondary damage from happening.
  • Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor whether the materials are drying properly.
  • Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.

What does it mean to “speed up Mother Nature”? A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material, but only if the air is drier. The problem here is nature often takes too long and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out.

Thankfully, the SERVPRO® of The Andovers professionals have the tools and equipment to help Mother Nature along to dry tough to reach places, hardwood floors, inside walls, and so much more. Using state of the art monitoring equipment and a proven scientific process we help speed up the drying process in your home or business. With the help of technology and our proprietary tool DryBookTM Mobile, you have the ability to know exactly where your Dracut property is in the drying process.

The bottom line? SERVPRO of The Andovers 978.475.1199 has the professional training and equipment to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Lead Contamination in Structure Fires

11/1/2019 (Permalink)

Notre Dame Cathedral Burning Lessons learned for the Notre Dame Cathedral fire

On April 15, 2019, fire broke out beneath the roof of the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral. Over 400 firefighters fought the blaze, which consumed approximately two thirds of the roof structure, including the 300-foot wooden spire.

The roof’s layers and spire, composed of approximately 450 tons of lead, quickly melted as the fire temperatures exceeded 1,400° F. As the smoke’s distinct yellow tinge suggested, the lead vaporized and created a toxic fallout of lead dust that was deposited across Paris.

In July of 2019, reports began to emerge that the levels of lead in areas surrounding the cathedral were 500 to 800 times the official safe level.

An Unexpected Threat - Lead Fumes and Fallout

During a structure fire, lead fumes are produced when lead or lead-containing materials are heated to temperatures above 932° F.  At these temperatures, lead vapor is released in the form of highly toxic lead oxide fumes. This vapor then condenses into solid fume particles which are released into the atmosphere.

Lead oxide is highly soluble in body fluids. The particle size of the metal fumes range between 0.1-0.7 microns, which increases the likelihood of inhalation and deposition of the fume directly into the bloodstream. When materials containing lead vaporize, the lead-laden smoke and other byproducts combine to form toxic particulate matter that permeate surfaces in the form of ultra-fine lead dust.  Molten lead or lead fumes also contain other toxic byproducts including chromium, cobalt, arsenic, cadmium, antimony, and mercury.

Lead Contamination in New Buildings

Although the sheer volume of lead that vaporized in the Notre Dame fire was unique, fire restoration contractors need to consider the likelihood that lead may be present in any fire damaged structure, especially those built after 1978. Now you may be asking yourself, “did he just say after 1978?” Believe it or not, lead based products are still being used in homes and buildings to this day.  It is conceivable that the level of lead contamination resulting from molten lead and lead-laden fumes could pose a greater risk of exposure than the small amount found in lead-based paint or ceramic tile glazing. This could come from a wide range of common household products.

Here are some common materials and household items that may contain lead.

Building Products:

  • Lead-based paints
  • Ceramic tile glazing
  • Porcelain glazing on bathtubs and sinks
  • Stained glass windows
  • Lead water piping
  • Pipe solder
  • Roof flashings
  • Lead lag shields
  • PVC
  • Solar cells
  • Rubber and plastics (Lead oxide and lead chromate)

Household Items:

  • Diving weights
  • Fishing weights and lures
  • Ammunition
  • Batteries
  • Tire weights
  • Electronics
  • Jewelry
  • Antiques
  • Earthenware, china, porcelain
  • Artificial turf
  • Artificial Christmas trees
  • Drapery weights
  • Children’s toys and books printed prior to 1985

Deodorization in Commercial Buildings

11/1/2019 (Permalink)

Office desk with computers No smell is too big or too small!

Effective odor removal in commercial buildings requires the four foundational principles of deodorization.

Principle 1: Identify and Remove the Primary Source

This is typically accomplished using the senses (site and smell) and by initial removal of the source by dry vacuum or sponge. Contractors should always contact the EPA, state or local environmental agencies for current disposal instructions of any chemicals left behind.

Principle 2: Clean the Contaminated Areas (Surfaces)

Cleaning is critical, and means physically cleaning residue by washing all surfaces starting at the source area and working outward. Washing of walls is recommended, whether there is visible residue or not.

Principle 3: Recreate the Conditions of Penetration

Recreation is typically accomplished with the appropriate application to reach penetration levels. Chlorine dioxide (“ClO2”) is a mature chemistry, that is an emerging odor control alternative for disaster restoration pros thanks to recent technological innovations. Although discovered in 1814, it wasn’t until the 1960’s that ClO2 emerged as the ‘go to’ chemistry for municipal water treatment to mitigate taste and odor issues while leaving no harmful by-products. Today, ClO2 is approved for many residential and commercial uses including deodorization, hospital-type disinfection, and mold control to name a few. SERVPRO offers SERVPROXIDE which helps elimination odors and kills 99.999% sanitization of food contact surfaces.

ClO2 in liquid form can be wiped, mopped or sprayed on to most surfaces, including colorfast soft surfaces. Additionally, ClO2 can be used as a vapor to deodorize difficult-to-access areas. Over the last four years, ClO2 has proven itself as a fast, effective, and scalable deodorizing and disinfection solution that is safe on most building materials and leaves no harmful chemical residue.

Principal 4: Sealing

Effective deodorization requires a combination of these principles; using only one technique, for example sealing, leads to incomplete and unsuccessful results. While sealing is not always required, it can be a solid last step.

When Water Becomes Mold in your North Andover, MA

moldy basement with contents Although every mold damage scenario is different requiring a unique solution, the general mold remediation process stays the same.

When there's a water intrusion, like a roof leak or leaking water line, mold can quickly become a problem in your Andover, MA business. Mold can cause health effects and can also cause significant damage to your property. Fortunately, your SERVPRO® of The Andovers has the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment necessary to handle your mold problem. Although every mold damage scenario is different requiring a unique solution, the general mold remediation process stays the same. The following steps illustrate a "typical" mold removal process.

Call 978-475-1199 for help with your mold remediation needs.

The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call SERVPRO of The Andovers. A representative will ask a series of questions to help determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel needed.

Inspection and Damage Assessment

Your property will be carefully inspected for signs of mold using technology designed to detect mold and hidden water sources. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view.

Mold Containment

Various containment procedures will be placed to prevent the spread of mold and isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process.

Air Filtration

Specialized filtration equipment captures microscopic mold spores out of the air. SERVPRO® technicians utilize powerful air scrubbers and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in progress.

Preparing for the Worst

4/23/2018 (Permalink)

A business plan for disaster will help shorten the amount of time you have to be out of work, and possibly lessen the financial impact it will have.

When it comes to your business, it is your pride and joy, something you put your blood, sweat and tears into.

Questions that run through your mind when disaster strikes, but are more helpful to think of before are:

  • Do you have insurance
  • Do you have an emergency plan in place? Does your staff know about it?
  • Can you access your business records if they were destroyed?

Creating a business plan for disaster will help protect employees, shorten the amount of time you may have to be out of work, and possibly lessen the financial impact it will have on you.

  1. Identify critical business systems – how long can they be down and what is needed to keep everything functioning.
  2. Create an emergency communication plan with all those who have a stake in your business.
  3. Build a supply kit that will keep your business and employees safe should you be at work when disaster strikes
  4. Work with SERVPRO of The Andovers to build an Emergency Ready Profile. This will provide the information for all emergency personnel that need to be contacted when disaster strikes and when our Team arrives on site, it gives the knowledge of your building before we even step in the door. This provides efficient and faster service for you!

After the Storm

Is Your Business Ready for Winter?

11/20/2017 (Permalink)

Ready for any size disaster, SERVPRO of The Andovers can use resources from across the country to help when needed.

The Farmer's Almanac, which has an 80% accuracy, is predicting a winter of icy temperatures and filled with snow! As some of us have now seen our first snow of the year, it is time to start thinking about what type of impact the cold weather can have on your business.  With winter, we have all experienced the frigid temperatures, heavy (weight and volume) of snow, sleet and ice dams. These can all cause damage to your property if the proper steps are not taken. Below is our top ten practices to prevent costly damages.

Before the Winter:

  1. Make sure gutters are pointed away from the building and clear of all debris.
  2. Inspect the roof and all water pipes to make sure they are in optimal working condition.
  3. Check walkways and parking lots before winter comes in strong to make sure there are no hazards that could be covered and cause damage to a car or person.
  4. Install mats or non-slip surfaces where water and ice could create potential hazards
  5. For any outdoor faucets, consider shutting off the water supply to it from inside at the main valve. Then, open the outdoor faucet to let it drip, releasing any water that could freeze.
  6. Create a plan for if power is lost. How will heat be maintained so that pipes don't freeze?
  7. If you have a generator, make sure it is ready for use outdoors, and that you have fuel on hand to service it.

During the winter:

  1. Be aware of any downed limbs or trees on your property. This winter weather can cause these to fall and therefore cause damage to your building.
  2. Continuously check walkways, handrails, stairs and parking lots to make sure they are safe for your customers.
  3. Protect your pipes from freezing. A simple way to do this, is when temperatures are going to drop below freezing, allow your faucets to have a small drip. Any pipes that are in cabinets, just open the doors so they can receive the warmth of the building surrounding it.

Most importantly, work with SERVPRO of The Andovers to prepare an Emergency Ready Plan (ERP) for your business. This is a no cost analysis for your property that will provide a plan for your business to get back up and running as quickly as possible following any type of disaster.

Do you have other things you do to help? Let us know, and we can continue growing our list!

Celebrating Small Business Week in 2017 with SERVPRO

4/25/2017 (Permalink)

From April 30 to May 6, 2017, America will celebrate Small Business Week, an annual event sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Association (SBA). According to Gregg White, owner of SERVPRO of The Andovers, Small Business Week is an opportunity for national and community leaders to recognize the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners to the country’s economy. White emphasizes there is nothing “small” about small business when it comes to its importance to the nation’s economic health. According to statistics from the SBA, 28 million small businesses in America account for 54 percent of all U.S. sales; of those 28 million businesses, the 600,000 U.S. franchised small businesses, like SERVPRO, account for 40 percent of all retail sales and provide jobs for some eight million people.
For entrepreneurs like White, becoming a franchise owner is one path to small business ownership. “Entrepreneurship is at the heart of a successful small business—the drive to own and grow a business through your own efforts,” said Sue Steen, SERVPRO Industries, Inc., chief executive officer. “Franchise organizations like SERVPRO give entrepreneurs a framework for their ambitions, access to state-of-the-art tools and processes, and a road map for sound financial management and growth.”
Some franchised small businesses offer entrepreneurs an opportunity to own and run their own small business while providing a service to the community they live and work in. With SERVPRO, for example, franchise ownership helps entrepreneurs combine their hometown knowledge and the emotional investment they have with their community with access to the latest disaster remediation technology and products. This combination creates a community asset that could prove invaluable to home and business owners who are struck by the unexpected. "I’m proud to be a small business owner in my community,” says White. “But, as a SERVPRO small business owner, I know that the unexpected can happen – a flood, a fire, an explosion, a storm, a mudslide, whatever the event might be – big or small. When the unexpected does happen, I’m also proud to know that my staff and I are ready to respond immediately and effectively to limit the damage to property and disruption to lives in my community. Having both an emotional and financial stake in the community is what distinguishes small businesses with local owners from other businesses. And that’s what makes small businesses such an important thread in the fabric of this country.”

Andover and North Andover Business Owners: Is Your Property Ready for Winter?

11/22/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of The Andovers is able reach out to franchises across the country to help with any size disaster when needed.

The Farmer's Alamac, which has an 80% accuracy, is predicting a winter of icy temperatures and filled with snow!
